CGC Cards Registry Featured Set: Detective Pikachu

Posted on 07/08/2025

This month's featured set focuses on Geek & Nerd Theory's Detective Pikachu set, which is more than half complete. Don't miss a Q&A with the set owner!

The Pokémon: Detective Pikachu set debuted in March 2019 to promote the release of the movie of the same name in theaters. Each card features a Pokémon that is shown in the movie, complete with the realistic art style that makes Detective Pikachu so unique and interesting to fans.

This small — but mighty! — 18-card set is difficult to collect. The Detective Pikachu set wasn't available in booster boxes or packs; instead, the cards were only available in set-related merchandise, much of which only contained a couple of cards each. Geek & Nerd Theory's GNT Detective Pikachu set is 55% complete and each card is graded CGC Gem Mint 10. We caught up with Geek & Nerd Theory to talk about this set and the CGC Cards Registry. Check out the Q&A below!

Q&A with the Set Owner

How did you become interested in collecting Pokémon cards?

I began collecting Pokémon cards in 1999, starting with the original Base Set, Jungle and Fossil sets, and later expanding into the Neo series. In 2016, I started grading my cards.

What is your favorite card in the set and why?

My favorite cards from the Detective Pikachu set are Bulbasaur and Arcanine — they did an incredible job bringing those two to life in the movie, and the artwork on their cards stands out as some of the best [in the set].

What card do you most want to add to this set?

Right now, I'm bidding on a CGC Gem Mint 10 Mewtwo. I'm also in the process of grading Morelull, Snubbull, Machamp and Magikarp. I'm getting close to completing the set, but Ditto has been the hardest card to track down. That's definitely the one I'm most eager to add.

What are your other collecting goals?

My collecting goals involve completing the sets I loved as a kid. At the top of the list are Base Set First Edition, Fossil, Jungle and Neo Genesis. My next priority are the Wizards of the Coast Black Star Promos and the Neo Discovery holos — I'm proud to have my two favorites, Umbreon and Espeon, in CGC 10. I'm also working on the 1999 Merlin sticker set. For fun, I'm putting together the Pokémon 151, Detective Pikachu and the 2021 Trick or Trade set. I'm even working on a few MetaZoo sets — especially the Nightfall holos. Once that's done, I'll be moving on to UFO and Wilderness.

Tell us how the CGC Cards Registry has helped with your collecting goals.

The CGC Cards Registry has been incredibly helpful, especially with how well the website organizes sets across all TCGs. Whether you're collecting Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh! or MetaZoo, you can easily browse each set and see exactly which cards you need to complete it. One of my favorite features is how the site displays high-quality images of your graded cards, allowing others to zoom in and appreciate even the smallest details. This level of presentation is one of the main reasons I prefer CGC over PSA.

The Registry is also very user-friendly. I especially like the "See Card Points" tab next to each registered card — it not only shows you the card's Registry score but also links directly to eBay to help you find missing cards or check market prices. It even includes card population data, so you can keep full track of your collection and its rarity. Overall, CGC has created a collector-focused platform that makes managing and enjoying your collection easy and engaging.
