Alpha Black Lotus Certified by CGC Realizes $75,000 in Heritage Sale
Posted on 07/07/2025
An Alpha Black Lotus graded CGC 8.5 realized the highest price for any certified card in a recent Heritage Auctions sale, which was focused on TCG cards and memorabilia. The Black Lotus was just one of more than 100 CGC-certified cards in Heritage’s Trading Card Games Signature Auction, which ended on June 28, 2025.
The Black Lotus, Magic: The Gathering (1993) Limited Edition Alpha graded CGC 8.5 (lot 36005) realized $75,000. Black Lotus is one of the most famous cards in Magic: The Gathering, and one of the most sought-after cards of all time. Part of the Power 9 — the nine most powerful cards in the game — Black Lotus was not printed in Magic: The Gathering after Unlimited Edition, which was released in 1993. This makes the Power 9 card extremely hard to find, especially in good condition. CGC has certified five examples of Limited Edition Alpha Black Lotus graded CGC 8.5, according to the CGC Cards Population Report, with only 17 graded higher.
Other CGC-certified cards in the sale included:
- a Black Lotus, Magic: The Gathering (1993) Limited Edition Beta graded CGC 8.5 (lot 36029) that realized $35,000
- a Splendid Genesis, Magic: The Gathering (1997) Richard Garfield Event Special certified as CGC Authentic (lot 36054) that realized $17,500
- a Black Lotus, Magic: The Gathering (1993) Limited Edition Beta certified as CGC Authentic Altered (lot 37020) that realized $16,875
- a Phoenix Heart, Magic: The Gathering (2014) Richard Garfield Event – 1/1 Special certified as CGC Authentic (lot 36055) that realized $15,625
- a Black Lotus, Magic: The Gathering (1993) Unlimited Edition graded CGC 7 (lot 36044) that realized $13,750
- an Ancestral Recall, Magic: The Gathering (1993) Limited Edition Alpha graded CGC 8.5 (lot 36001) that realized $10,625
- a Timetwister, Magic: The Gathering (1993) Limited Edition Alpha graded CGC 8 (lot 36020) that realized $10,000
