CGC-certified Charizard Holo Realizes $90,000 in May Fanatics Collect Auctions

Posted on 10/06/2025

The May auctions also featured several sports card highlights, including a Precious Metal Gems rarity of legendary Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith and a one-of-one SuperFractor of Pirates star pitcher Paul Skenes.

A “Disco” holo Charizard graded CGC Pristine 10 has become the seventh highest-selling CGC-certified trading card on Fanatics Collect’s auction platform, taking the spot only one month after the previous record holder. The rarity is just one of the thousands of CGC-certified TCGs, sports cards and non-sports cards that were sold through Fanatics Collect marketplace in May 2025.

The Charizard, Pokémon (1999) “Disco” Holo Test Print graded CGC Pristine 10 realized $90,000 on May 22, at the end of Fanatics Collect’s May Premium Auction. As of June 2025, this Pristine 10 “Disco” Holo Charizard is the highest-graded example in the CGC Cards Population Report. As Wizards of the Coast was preparing to release the Base Set of the Pokémon TCG, they started experimenting with different holofoil patterns to use on cards. Though the “Disco” holofoil pattern wasn’t used in the official release, some test prints have gotten into the hands of the public. CGC Cards has only certified 11 “Disco” Holo Charizard cards as of June 2025.

Additionally, a Gengar, Pokémon (2003) Skyridge Holo graded CGC Pristine 10 realized $11,400 on May 11. Gengar is right up there with the likes of Charizard and Pikachu in popularity, which makes many of Gengar’s more vintage cards very valuable to collectors. This Skyridge Gengar is one of only 10 examples graded CGC Pristine 10, according to the CGC Cards Population Report.

Meanwhile, hundreds of CGC-certified sports cards were sold through Fanatics Collect in May as well, with the top highlight being a rare football card from the 1990s that is numbered to only 50 ever made of one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. A 1998 Metal Universe #42 Emmitt Smith - Precious Metal Gems graded CGC 7 realized $15,600 on May 22.

Precious Metal Gems (PMGs) are well-known as one of the rarest cards of the 1990s. PMGs were initially inserted into Metal Universe football sets in 1997 (with print runs of 150), however, the 1998 PMGs were reduced to only 50 cards made. Considering the scarcity of the cards and that PMGs were also known for having surface blemishes and edge wear, this card graded CGC 7 is even more uncommon, as it stands alone in the CGC Cards Population Report.

Another sports highlight from May's Fanatics Collect sales was a one-of-one SuperFractor of arguably the most popular pitcher in baseball right now: Paul Skenes. A 2024 Topps Gilded Collection God Storm #GS-3 Paul Skenes - SuperFractor certified CGC Authentic realized $12,600 on May 4. It gets no rarer than a SuperFractor, and with Skenes being one of the hottest commodities in baseball card collecting today, there are few issues that are more coveted than his one-of-one gems. One of the MLB's youngest stars at only 23 years old, he currently ranks in the Top 10 in strikeouts and ERA this season. As one of the most sought-after players in modern collecting, it's no surprise Skenes' rarest cards are fetching premium prices at auction.

Notable Upcoming Fanatics Collect Sales

Fanatics Collect continues to offer CGC-certified cards in their weekly, fixed and premium auction formats. One of the sports highlights available in June is a 2022-23 Panini Origins Rookie Jersey Autographs #RJA-PBC Paolo Banchero graded CGC 9, with an autograph graded CGC 10. As one of the young stars of the NBA, Banchero became an immediate focal point to build around after the Orlando Magic selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. This season, the 22-year-old forward led Orlando per game in minutes, points, rebounds and free throws made. Although Banchero led the Magic to the playoffs once again this year, another early exit has the team hoping for a deeper run in the postseason going forward.
